The French silk industry began in the mid-1500s and reached its apogee in the heart of late 18th-19C Lyon. This area is handsomely characterized by a distinctive architecture based on the 4-meter height of the Jacquard silk looms and the tall windows needed to provide light for their workers. In 1780 there were more than 6,000 brodeurs in Lyon itself. Many beautiful examples can be found in the Musee des Tissues in Lyon, and silks from the 18th and 19th C can still be found today, many in superb condition, depending on their use and light exposure. It is also interesting to watch the path of their usage- from nobility to the church to today- in museums, or in homes used as a baldaquin, pillow, or other decorative applications.

The silks that we offer you today include liturgical items, such as vestments and alter pieces with lavish embroidery, perfect for many decorative uses, brilliantly colored silks with intricate motifs woven on the Jacquard loom, and lush silk lampas with a velvety pile. These items are available in small to large pieces, pillows and draperies, as well as some costumes.
